What Is Yoga?

Welcome to my page all about Yoga.  I run Yoga classes and Yoga retreat-style events for all levels, including beginners, in Gravesend, Higham, Shorne and Meopham. I’m thrilled to share my passion for this incredible practice with you. Whether you’re a complete yoga beginner, a more advanced yoga practitioner, or are looking for some Yoga for calm that doesn’t require any physical effort, there’s something for everyone on Yoga’s transformative journey.

All you have to do to get started on your personal Yoga journey is book your class, roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and we’ll  dive into the world of yoga together!

Yoga can be traced back to over 5000 years ago. Essentially, it’s a spiritual discipline that focuses on harmonising mind, body, and soul.

ASANA is the physical practice of Yoga.  It’s what most people think of when they think about Yoga.  It’s sometimes referred to as meditative movement. There are many different styles that include:

Hatha – you’ll typically adopt a posture and hold it for a few breaths with awareness on the breath and body sensations, before moving mindfully to another.

Vinyasa – you’ll flow from one posture to another using the breath to guide you.

Yin – you’ll hold the postures passively for several minutes to encourage the release of long-held tension within the body’s connective tissue, while you take your awareness inwards.

Restorative Yoga – No physical effort involved at all as it’s all about being, rather than doing! While fully supported on props like yoga bolsters, yoga blocks, yoga blankets and cushions.  While you hold the ‘poses’ for 5-20 minutes at a time this triggers healing mechanisms in the body’s nervous system that allow you to completely let go to find calm and peace

PRANAYAMA (breathing techniques), MEDITATION, and RELAXATION, are non-physical.  Nevertheless, they can all  have a profound effect on your state of mind, making it quieter, clearer, more aware and present. Used alone or alongside one another, these practices can be used to help alleviate stress and anxiety.

Typically, a yoga class will include a small element of breathwork, meditation, and relaxation.
